Hey, so i need some sort of igntion/lighting for the lt250r motor for the grom. parts are stupid expensive, and the stock stator looks.. lacking. also, im missing the flywheel.

so, i was wondering, can the RM250 rotor/ignition be used on this motor (mine does not have the elec start) ? because HPI has a unit for the RM250 of that year. (86)  for like 200 bucks.

EDIT: I looked and the stators are different animals between the two so it's gonna be a crap shoot. Stators are available for the LT and RM but no rotors for either available.

thats why i want to use an hpi unit. i mean, worst case i guess i can mahine a stator plate to use the hpi, i might have to 'bet' the crank tapers are the same (seems more likely than not)

um, no, you need the interference fit, and i'm not lapping like 1mm or more from the taper, if that were the case id cut a new taper on the rotor  :dawg: I'll get it, progress is being made.   :metal:

i simply meant should the rotor fit lap it. Not attempt to alter the taper with abrasives.  :busey:

It's true.  RMX has a lighting coil etc.

A buddy of mine has a 96'-98'ish RMX i can take a look at if it helps.

fix the stock stator. you have 4 wires coming out of the stator? igniter, cdi, ac, ac. simple rewire to 3 phase then a generic r/r. flywheels are on ebay. if I know what I'm talking about the two ac coils will both be grounded to the stator plate. ungrounding will fix.

well, the motor changed after 86. not sure what swaps.

ben, you are correct. I do have all that, and it is in useable shape. However, trying to avoid using 34 year old windings if i can.  and, i don't have the cdi igniter box (i know i could use a generic one). By the time i get the correct flywheel and box, im more than halfway to a new HPI.
Just weighing the options, i still need to get the motor in the frame, and then actually put the engine together after the adapters are made.

I don't even bother buying "NOS" windings, I rewind it with brand new magnet wire.
It's an option.   Easy enough with a single post coil.
I just count the removed turns (per layer as well), measure the gauge and rewind it.
I've done a few ignition source coils that way.

coils do not need to be rewound ever. what is needed is a full wave solution. unground the 2 coils connect them together and run 3 phase. you will have all the juice you need. done it a dozen times.

you even can just unground one lighting coil and use a scoot r/r. one ungrounded coil will have the same output as 2 grounded coils. I've run this way no issues.

rev box, r/r, flywheel 45$
