On the other hand, if there were such a thing as a "field attachable" cable end, I might be home free.

After ordering the recommended cable from CMSNL and it coming in crushed with a costly tariff - and the refusal of the ends to fit through the angled adjusters, I ordered a genuine Yamaha RD400 cable from Economy Cycle.

All ok enough at the carbs, though a little crowded at the frame cross brace.

The prob is the oil pump branch not being workable.

I'm taking the oil pump cable out of the CMSNL unit and grafting it in to the RD400 cable. A bit of a hack job. I think that will work.

The little things will give you the hardest time.

Gonna order another 400 cable from John. Made in Japan and I would be proud to have it on my lower miles '77. It's top quality.

FedEx has sent me (3) overdue $20 invoices for the "tariff" on the CMNSL cable that they broke. I asked CMNSL to make a claim with FedEx. Maybe they didn't. I really don't see paying extra for a broken cable.

Finally got a RD400 cable working with the grafted-in RZ oil pump leg attached.
VM28s look good on the RZ. So, RD400 carbs and new Yamaha RD400 cable with RZ oil pump leg sub'd in:

...and went for a long ride.
Everything is now FINE. Runs smooth throttle response is great. Cool crackling on throttle let-off. The RD400 jetted carbs seem to be on target for the RZ. Took years to get there with the RD. Went on the interstate to try to duplicate the bog/die out/pull off the road problem. It no longer exists.

Only problems now are the neutral light stopped working and the clutch still slips a little - even on an 80 degree F day.

It was carbs all along. I now hate the single cable stock RZ carb set up. Split cable carbs preferred any day.

Congrats! I bet that feels good to have that fiasco behind you! (I can relate, as I know the feeling of frustration from a long-term issue all too well.)
Now as one of my riding buddies says, "ride the piss out of it!"

Yes,ride it till something breaks

It's ok to leave the RD400 sitting for awhile with no carbs and I'll need a plan for that.

Appreciate the help from everyone.
Not feeling great about hogging so much forum space, nor losing a whole riding season getting to the bottom of it.

It's hard to remember that it's fixed now. But yeah, a good feeling.

I can't believe it was the carbs. but I believe it. well, you know what worked on the 400 so get another set and replicate that. should be good to go

Fantastic! Resolution is a great outcome, and you've provided plenty of entertainment for us along the way. I'd sure like to know what is wrong with your stock carbs. 🤔

I understand. Will still keep ripping around on it to convince myself before making a move.

The RD VM28s have UFOs in them that were hacked to fit. Hard to duplicate.
Maybe a cheap PWK28 kit project.

Congratulations! Time to ride the piss out of it.
