Hey guys!

New RD350 guy here.  I joined the old forum right before it went down - long story short, rebuilding the engine on my good friends '74 due to a badly cracked lower case half.  Since I'm a newbie, I made the mistake of taking apart the shift drum when I pulled it out of the old case.  In doing so I didn't pay any attention to the orientation of the pawl plate, or if it needs to be in a specific position at all?  I was able to shift it into all the gear on the bench in it's current orientation, and it didn't over shift, but wanted to check with the experts before I seal it all back up!

Here you go

Take your time and take plenty of pictures or record yourself doing the rebuild

Hey quocle603, thanks for the reply.  I've been referencing Sfbrain's rebuild tutorial throughout this process, so I'm quite familiar with the picture you posted.  Unfortunately, it doesn't help me with my question regarding the pawl plate, because he (wisely) didn't take that assembly apart.  When you remove the retaining plate (328-18561-00) and the 6 dowel pins (93604-22050) effectively disassembling the "cage" on the clutch side end of the shift cam, the pawl plate (328-18352-10) comes out.  The pawl plate is positioned by two of the retaining pins.  I need to know if it matters which two, because it will happily install in any position between any two of the 6 dowel pins.

I'm sorry, I don't know which position it would be. I would have to reference my spare engine but its at my shop. I won't be back there til Friday.

Not in a huge hurry, I'd really appreciate it!  Right now the pawl plate is in the NW position.  In this location I was able to shift up and down through all 6 gears and everything seems fine... Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Try calling Oilypipes in PA. Eric knows a thing or two about RDs

Thanks for the lead, is Oilypipes a member here?

Still not able to find any info on this subject.  I have a digital copy of an rd350 shop manual that for some reason doesn't include any transmission info, searched the tech section on this forum, even did a google image search (along with a half dozen different keyword searches and I'm striking out.  This is the only thing keeping me from putting the engine back in the chassis and finishing the rebuild.  Does anybody have an old engine laying around that would be will to investigate?

Really appreciate any help.

I don't know what Yamaha call that part but it's the stopper to prevent going from 6th to 1st.  I am sure it's symmetrical.

Bottom line is does the trans shift correctly and stop before it over shifts? If so, it should be OK

That's what I thought it was for, thanks for the confirmation!
