Hello,

I just want to make sure I do this right. I just installed new carbs and am going to prime my oil lines. I'm not sure if I absolutely need to do this since the bike was running with the old carbs, but it was recommended.

Do I just hold the throttle wide open and turn the plastic white gear at the bottom in a clockwise/downward motion?

Also, do I need to adjust the cable to align the longer notch to the pin of the front of the pump?

Just do it as a safety precaution to make sure there were not any air bubbles developed.

Yes, that is the method to it. If you're running clear lines, do it until you can see it going into the carbs. If not, then just do it until oil comes shooting out.

Yes. That notch should be in lined up with the small dot in front of the line.
Do not underestimate the power of a two-stroke.

thank you. I'll give it a shot. I was a bit worried about turning that white gear in the wrong direction. Trying not to screw more stuff up while working on something relatively simple.

Just to be sure, its the dash and not the dot that needs to line up with the pin right?

1. Also, should I completely pull out the bleed screw first, then wait for oil to drip out?

2. Once the oil comes out, then install the screw back in.

3. Afterwards, bleed the oil  lines.

Yes, yes, and yes. You're on the right track.

Another Note:
RD350's are timed at idle.
RD400's are timed at full throttle.

I think the oil line is lined up to the pin at the dot. However, it will use a ton of oil fyi. You will make blue clouds of goodness for tailgaters at full hop.

I finally had time to get everything put back together (new carbs, petcock, etc..). The "adjust pulley guide pin" is supposed to line up with the "mark" on the pump pulley. Unfortunately, the manual doesn't specify whether it is the "dot" or "dash" that the pin needs to line up to. Some videos online for similar yamaha's say to line it up to the "dash", but I've also heard to line it up to the "dot." Does anyone have a definite answer on this one? I really want to crank the ole MRDRcycle up.

Thanks for everyone's input along the way!

The factory service manual simply states:

"Adjust the pump cable so the raised mark on the pump pulley lines up with the guide pin."

The raised mark, not the line.

Those markings are so close it doesnt matter.
Its on the idle position on the cam anyway.
RD350's had the pumps turned up back then.
Just put in 1/2 gallon of premix at 50:1 in the tank.
Squirt a little 2 stroke oil in the carbs, push down choke the carb left carb,
make sure you have the choke tube on in between the carbs, leave key off and give it 2 kicks leaving the throttle closed, turn on ignition anf kick to fire up just giving it a little gas as it starts up.
Take off choke as soon as you can run without it.
Reach down to the oil pump cable and pull it wide open while holding 2000-2500 rpms for about 90seconds to 2 mins.
Pump will have worked at filling the lines at this point as long as you pulled the bleed screw first bleeding any bubbles out.

Thank you. Should I mix the oil with about a gallon of gas in a container first,  then pour about half or so of it into the tank? Or is it best to mix it all directly inside the tank itself? Not sure it really matters, but figured I would throw it out there.

That's fine too.
