Spluttering when rich - what's actually happening?

Hi all,

I hope everyone had a good Christmas.

Can anyone explain what's actually going on inside the combustion chamber (2 stroke) when overly rich jetting is making a bike splutter at the top of the rev range?

Would it cause extra pressure inside the motor?
